Divine and mortal nature

Achilles was the son of Peleas, king of the Myrmidons in Fthia, and Thetis, a Nirid goddess of the sea. From his mother he inherited divine descent, and from his father the mortal fate of man. This dual nature determined his whole life and destiny.

Thetis and the effort of immortality

Thetis tried to make her son immortal. According to the most famous myth, he plunged him into the waters of the Styx holding him from the heel. Thus, his whole body became invulnerable, except where he was holding him. — the legendary achille heel.

Achilles was raised by the wise centaur Chiron, who taught him:

Thetis knew the oracle:

Achilles led the Myrmidons, the most elite army of the Achaeans. His presence on the battlefield was enough to terrorize the Trojans.

The conflict with Agamemnon

His dispute with Agamemnon over Brissida caused his departure from battle. Achilles' anger is her central theme Iliad and symbolizes the conflict between personal honor and collective duty.
